Headshots or Portraits? sessions based in kent - what to expect and what they are!

Headshots and portraits: what’s the difference? I’ll admit, I often use the same word to cover both headshots and portraits, but in the professional world, there is a difference. Headshots are used by people to represent themselves in their line of work, whether it’s in the performing, creative or corporate world. Portraits have more of a blurred boundary and allow the photographer and subject to be more creative or to lean into a certain theme.

Headshot: “a photograph of a person's face or head and shoulders."

Portrait: “a portrait is an artwork that tells a person's story.”

Headshots, although structured to the head and shoulders format, can differ hugely depending on who you are, what you wish to portray. Often, clients return after a couple of years to update their headshots and it helps them to appreciate how they have grown, carved a new pathway or matured. I make headshot sessions relaxed and informal, and offer a range of backdrops and lighting options. These often take place in my home studio in Gillingham, Kent, where my faithful four legged friend will surely offer her advice in return for tickles.

I offer headshot sessions for actors, dancers, models, business owners, and corporate groups.

Portrait sessions, on the other hand, do not need to fit a format or a certain criteria, and they can involve other people and be open to creative ideas and story telling. There are endless possibilities, and a portrait session can take place in a studio or location setting.
